Technical support to the State Office for Nuclear Safety regarding disposal of radioactive waste
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Based on the Czech waste management Concept there is a direct disposal of spent nuclear fuel and high level waste in geological disposal facility considered as the most economical and safe option. Due to this fact, future Czech geological disposal facility operator has to propose the most suitable site within siting process. Currently, four sites from nine till the end 2018 and, within next phase of site selection two candidate sites till 2022. The national nuclear safety regulator will assess the suitability of proposed site/s in terms of its safety requirements within licensing process, resp. within site safety case evaluation. The work presented has been carried out to support regulator in an independent assessment of the safety of considered facility sites. The studies were focused on (i) the inventory of waste to be disposed of, (ii) the performance of engineered barriers and geotechnical aspects, and (iii) the assessment of three considered facility concepts. Geological disposal facility operator could not initiate the geological investigation of nine selected sites; and therefore site specific input data to models were not available. Safety studies of a reference site aiming at identification of problems were considered while assessing suitability of disposal solutions once the relevant input data have been available.
