The Impact of Top Management Team Diversity on the Appointment of Chief Digitalization Officers in German Firms

This study provides empirical evidence on the role of top management team (TMT) diversity in shaping executive leadership and driving digital transformation within organizations. By focusing on the German context, it enriches the discourse on diversity, executive appointments, and performance in the digital era, offering valuable insights for both scholars and practitioners. The aim of the study is to examine how diversity within TMTs influences the appointment of Chief Digitalization Officers (CDOs) in German companies navigating the challenges of digitalization. Using a quantitative research design, the analysis draws on a comprehensive dataset of German firms and measures TMT diversity across gender, ethnicity, and educational background. The research investigates how these diversity dimensions affect the likelihood of CDO appointments and assesses the subsequent implications for firms’ technological advancement. The results reveal a strong positive correlation between TMT diversity and the appointment of CDOs. Firms with more diverse executive teams are significantly more likely to establish digital leadership roles, which in turn is associated with higher levels of technological innovation and digital transformation.
