Der Beitrag geht zunächst der Frage nach, ob es eine "österreichische Literatur" überhaupt gibt, wie dieser Begriff zu verstehen ist und wie er sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte entwickelt hat. Im zweiten Teil wird ein geschichtlicher Abriss der österreichischen Literaturgeschichten dargestellt und abschließend die neuesten Versuche einer umfassenden österreichischen Literaturgeschichte kritisch überprüft, wobei das Konzept von Herbert Zeman dem von Schmidt-Dengler gegenübergestellt wird.

The paper explores the question if the concept of the history of Austrian literature is justified, how it can be defined and how it has developed throughout the century. The second part provides a brief overview of the development as well as of books ofthis Austrian literary history. The last part critically examines current concepts of the history of Austrian literature. The concepts of literary history of two professors from the University of Vienna _ Herbert Zeman and Wendelin Schmidt-Dengler - represent the two basic opposite poles.
