Das Sprechen und Schreiben über die Kunst verliert ihre Selbstverständlichkeit in der Zeit, als anscheinend paradox, das Interesse des gebildeten Publikums an der Kunst, vor allem an der Malerei, systematisch wächst und auch sprachlich sehr produktiv wird. Die Würdigung des Gefühls in der Kunstbetrachtung geht nicht zuletzt auf die Aufwertung der unmittelbaren sinnlichen Erfahrung zurück und wird folglich in der Kunstbeschreibung zugleich schöpferisch wie problematisch. Der Artikel erörtert diese Themenam Beispiel von zwei Texten: August Wilhelm Schlegels "Die Gemählde. Gespräch" und Johann Wolfgang Goethes "Briefe aus der Schweiz

Around 1800, the notions of nativeness and immediateness in regard to the literary treatment of art became central. By a comparison of Schlegel's Louise and Goethe's Werther, this essay examines the possibilities to put the aesthetic experience into words. In these texts, the sensual and aesthetic pleasure while being confronted with works of art is constructed as a kategory of contemplation as well as a device to communicate art. Especially conversation about art, seen as a literary genre, is crucial,since its "fictional spontaneity" allows it to function as a mediator between the immediateness of the aesthetic experience and the need to communicate these feelings.
