Der Artikel beschäftigt sich mit der Bedeutung und den Konotationen des Begriffes Sudeten oder Sudety und seiner Ableitungen in den böhmischen Ländern. Seit der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts läuft die Karriere des umstrittenen Begriffs bis zu den heutigen Tagen. Es werden die Dynamik bei dem Definieren des Inhalts und die Veränderungen im Laufe der Zeit herausgearbeitet. Dabei wird darauf hingewiesen, dass die die Umcodierung des Begriffs mit den geopolitischen Veränderungen und dem territorialen Diskurs der Zeit zusammenhängen. Die deutsche und tschechische Konzetionen lagen konträr gegeneinander. Erst in der Zeit nach 1989 ist eine Annäherung zu beobachten, allerdings werden die nationalen Konotationen verworfen. In der tschechischen Gesellschaft führt es zu einer Renaissance des Begriffes, wober er eine naiv-idealistische Gestalt bekommt.

This contribution deals with the notion behind the word "Sudety" (in German: Sudeten), and its derivations and connotations in Czech. The narrative starts in the middle of the 19th century, when the catchword started its career, and leads up to the present time. The autor relates what changes its meaning has undergone in the course of time, reflecting parallel changes in the "conflict community" of Czech and German nationals and their respective discourse about national territory. For a long time, mutualy exluding German and Czech notions of "sudety/ Sudeten" represented a dichotomy. Only under the democratic conditions established after 1989 has a degree of reconciliation been possible, with connotations referring to the antagonism between the nationsbeing refuted. In the Czech environment, however, the word "Sudety" has reaquired a naiveor idealistic content in the process.
