Cicero in De re publica analysiert die Beziehung zwischen Philosophie und Politik. Cicero unterscheidet Philosophie in der Bedeutung von sapientia und prudentia - wobei die erste die theoretische Philosophie charakterisiert und die zweite als praktischeWeisheit in der römischen Republik Stabilität und Beständigkeit garantiert und die gemischte Ordnung in Einheit hält. Gleichzeitig wird jedoch jener Philosoph zum Politiker, der sich Philosophie in der Bedeutung von prudentia aneignet. Dadurch entsteht etwas Neues, etwas, das beides - Politik und Philosophie - vereinigt. Es geht aber nicht nur um deren bloße Verbindung, sondern um eine völlig neue Qualität.

The subject of Philosophy and Politics in Cicero include, inter alia, the question of the true statesman, who is characterized by conduct that is based on common interest and the common good of the state. The statesman and philosopher, despite sharing the same views of the good of the state, however differ in the respect that the statesman embraces these values in his behavior and does not linger only in the world of theoretical considerations. Yet Cicero argues against the Epicureans and argues that philosophy should result in behavior and that any behavior should be theoretically based. This confrontation of philosophy and politics stands in the background of the work De re publica by Cicero. We will be interested to know what the difference betweenstatesman and philosopher in Cicero's work is.
