Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit kulturellen und sozialen Aspekten des Zusammenlebens der Deutschen, der deutschsprachigen Juden und der Tschechen in Böhmen in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Der historische Hintergrund bildet daher den ersten Teil der Studie. Im zweiten Teil der Studie werden die Autobiographie Erinnerungen (1918) und die deutschnationalen Romane Der letzte Deutsche von Blatna (1887) und Die böhmische Handschrift (1897) von Fritz Mauthner interpretiert. In Schilderung seiner Laufbahn als Literat, Journalist und Philosoph thematisiert Mauthner seine, wie er sie versteht, durch die historische Entwicklung Böhmens und den Verlauf der jüdischen Assimilation herbeigeführte Identitäts- und Sprachkrise. Die Romane Die FamilieLowositz (1908), Rudolf und Camilla (1910) und die Novelle Der Tod des Löwen (1916) von Auguste Hauschner werden im dritten Teil der Arbeit analysiert. This study examines various aspects of German speaking Bohemian Jewish culture of the latter half of the nineteenth century in the works of Fritz Mauthner and Auguste Hauschner. It shows that Bohemian Jewish identity formation as and through linguistic alienation and crisis determined much of the articulation and development of fin-de-si?cle Prague German literature. Mauthner's Erinnerungen bear witness to a changing climate of rigid linguistic protocol met with fluid, at times unstable praxis of lingistic signification. In describing his life as a novelist, journalist, and philosopher, Mauthner thematizes in a representative way his own quest for a stable identity through this confrontation with linguistic crisis amid the seismic shifts in bohemian cultural traditions and the accelerated trajectory of Jewish assimilation.
