Der Aufsatz untersucht Max Brods Roman „Arnold Beer“ (1912), in dem der Autor auf den Sprach- und Identitätsverlust des mitteleuropäischen Judentums und eine Wiederanknüpfung an abgetrennte Wurzeln bei völliger Neuorientierung durch die ,dritte (seine) Generation‘ anspielte. Vertreten durch den jungen Arnold, trifft eine orientierungslose deutsch assimilierte Enkelgeneration auf ein fast erloschenes Judentum, verkörpert durch die Großmutter Arnolds. In dem nordböhmischen Jiddisch der Uralten konzipierte Brod literarisch das Medium eines ursprünglich archaischen Judentums, das den deutsch jüdischen Leser (wie die Romanfigur) zum einen durch seine Intensität affektiv berühren und auf die eigenen kulturellen Wurzeln zurückverweisen sollte und zum anderen durch seine Unverständlichkeit, die Brod größtenteils durch Hebraismen evozierte, zum Lernen der aus zionistischer Sicht zukunftsweisenden jüdischen Sprache (Neuhebräisch) animieren sollte.

The paper examines Max Brodʼs novel “Arnold Beer” (1912), in which the author alluded to the loss of language and identity of Central European Jewry and a reconnection to severed roots with a complete reorientation by the ‘third (his) generationʼ. Represented by the young Arnold, a disoriented German-assimilated grandchild generation meets an almost extinct Jewry, embodied by Arnoldʼs grandmother. In the North Bohemian Yiddish of the ancient woman, Brod literarily conceived the medium of an originally archaic Jewry, which was intended to affect the German Jewish reader (like the novel character) on the one hand through its intensity and refer back to his or her own cultural roots, and on the other hand through its incomprehensibility, which Brod evoked for the most part through Hebraisms, to animate him or her to learn the Jewish language (New Hebrew), which from a Zionist point of view pointed the way to the future.
