Ausgehend von der Autobiographie des deutschen Schriftstellers und Philosophen Fritz Mauthner "Erinnerungen: Prager Jugendjahre" (1918) werden anhand des Sprachunterrichts an den Gymnasien die Schulreform von 1848-1853 und ihre Auswirkungen auf die nationalen und sprachlichen Verhältnisse in der Habsburgermonarchie eingehend analysiert. Es stellt sich heraus, dass diese Verhältnisse, die schließlich zum Zusammenbruch der Monarchie führten, sehr eng mit Mauthners späterer Sprachkritik zusammenhängen. Die Sprach- und Nationalitätenpolitik im Jahrzehnt nach 1848 werden somit in den breiteren Kontext der zeitgenössischen Diskurse gestellt.

Based on the autobiography of the German author and philosopher Fritz Mauthner "Erinnerungen: Prager Jugendjahre" (1918), the school reform of 1848-1853 and its impact on the national and linguistic conditions in the monarchy is analysed in detail in the context of language teaching in grammar schools in Austria-Hungary. It turns out that these conditions, which eventually led to the collapse of the monarchy, are very closely related to Mauthner's later critique of language. Language and nationality policy in the decade after 1848 is thus placed in the broader context of contemporary schools of thought.
