Literarische Mehrsprachigkeit ist keineswegs ein ?neues? Phänomen, wie das verstärkte Interesse der Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften in den letzten Jahrzehnten suggerieren mag. Sie ist vielmehr als ein umfassendes literarisches Phänomen aufzufassen, das in unserer aktuellen sozialen und politischen Gegenwart ebenso präsent wie in unserer literarischen und poetischen Wahrnehmung der Welt verankert ist. Ein Phänomen, dem bei der Beschäftigung mit der österreichischen Literatur besondere Aufmerksamkeit zu widmen ist ? in Bezug sowohl auf die Bestimmungs- und Abgrenzungskonzepte als auch auf die Untersuchung des zentraleuropäischen, multikulturellen und -lingualen Raums, der zum unmittelbaren Kontext der österreichischen Literatur und Kultur gehört.

Literary multilingualism is by no means a 'new' phenomenon, as the increased interest in literary and cultural studies in recent decades might suggest. Rather, it is to be understood as a comprehensive literary phenomenon that is just as present in our current social and political present as it is anchored in our literary and poetic perception of the world. It is a phenomenon to which particular attention must be paid when dealing with Austrian literature - both in relation to the concepts of definition and demarcation and to the examination of the Central European, multicultural and multilingual space that is part of the immediate context of Austrian literature and culture.
