The Blue Colour in the phraseological image of the World of Belarusians and Czechs

The article is dedicated to comparative analysis of the blue colour in Belarusian and Czech phraseo-logy. The objects of linguistic research are phraseological units with coloronym (sini / modrý). The main goal is to compare the representation of blue colour using both synchronic and diachronic ap-proach, identification of equivalents and lacunae, description of national and cultural specifics of phraseologisms. The main comparative method is supplemented by etymological and linguistic-cultural commentaries, the method of continuous sampling of material from Czech and Belarusian phraseological dictionaries is also implemented. Observations of the development of phraseological semantics of blue colour confirm the idea of semantic ambivalence of any color expressed by art critics. Steady comparisons in which the color blue reflects a direct meaning mean that something actually has shades of blue (like the sky, like cornflowers). Phraseologisms in which the color blue is subject to the process of metaphorization reflect the social tendencies created by man. Few interlin-gual equivalents are represented by borrowings (calques) common for european languages. Outdated units prevail in the "blue phraseology" of both languages. Neological trends are fueled by two sources: globalization trends and national realities. The analysis of the dictionary material showed that in Belarusian and Czech phraseology blue is not dominant, and there are few phraseological units with blue color semantics in both languages. Despite this, in the phraseological stock of both languages they occupy their niche and carry a specific semantic load.
