Assessment of noisiness of rumble strips installed in front of railway level crossing, using the static and dynamic methods
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In frame of research project RÜTTLEX, so called rumble strips (in form of 3-4 mm high transverse lines of road marking) were designed and tested for use at level crossings. The installation and assessment of efficiency were carried out at two localities in Niederösterreich (level crossings in Raggendorf and Göllersdorf). Rumble strips represent relatively simple and low-cost measure supposed to increase driver’s knowledge about approaching level crossing, with both optical and mechanical impact (vibration and breaking of driving monotony). Appropriately applied, the measure emphasizes presence of the crossing, increases awareness and improves behaviour of drivers, reduces speed and to certain extent also helps drivers to focus their attention properly. As one of the project activities, noise measurements were carried out. After installation of rumble strips on the roadway, A – weighted sound pressure level increased by about 6 dB according to static and dynamic measurements. Although the detailed speed measurements, observation, and psychological experiment proved the measure to be promising in sense of traffic safety, its application cannot be generally recommended for level crossing in built-up areas because of possible deterioration of acoustic welfare of inhabitants.
