In case of a serious health issue following traffic accident, first aid provided by lay bystanders is one of the factors influencing the survival rates as well as the health damage. Skilled and motivated lay rescuers constitute an important part of the emergency care system. From our point of view, there are four levels of competency that should be met: 1. Knowledge, 2. Skills, 3. Willingness and preparedness to help on place, 4. Ability to cope with the situation afterwards. All of these levels should be considered both in the process of training and in the system of support of the lay rescuer. These principles can be applied not only on the lay first aid but also on the professional first aid providing and training process.
