The wave-based control theory was derived for a one-dimensional chain of masses connected with springs. Even the proof of stability was just derived on a one-dimensional case. A one-dimensional case is a single-input system. It can also be said that the individual masses of the chain each have only one degree of freedom independently. Of course, overall, the system has more degrees of freedom than one. E.g., the system in Fig. 1 has 4 degrees of freedom because its current position can be described by four coordinates. However, it is controlled by only one actuator and the position of each mass is described by only one coordinate, so it is labeled as 1D system. For recapitulation and introduction into the WBC issues, it is beneficial to summarize the results of the WBC application on a simple 1D model. In controlling even such a simple system, there are parameters that influence the resulting behavior of the control.
