The Department of Vehicles and Engines (Technical University of Liberec), in cooperation with ŠKODA AUTO a.s. R&D Department, a special mule internal combustion engine for friction loss detailed determination was built. The individual sources of friction losses have been investigated using motoring tests. Two experimental variants of measuring mechanical losses by motoring of ICE with increased pressure in-cylinder were designed and manufactured. First, variant A for the motoring regime while all valves are permanently closed (’2-stroke’ mode) was developed. A special self-action one-way valve (instead of the spark plug) allows for correct in-cylinder filling/pressure. No technical problem(s) with the last version of the special one-way valve was experienced (fully functional). Variant B for motoring regime was proposed based on closed-loop with connecting the exhaust to the intake (’4-stroke’ mode). Technical problem(s) with the pulsation in the closed-loop system was encountered. Detailed analysis of experimental data (thermodynamics analysis, blow-by) shows that variant A is a more suitable way to investigate the mechanical losses in the ICE (for accelerated wear tests of a piston group, especially piston rings).

  • Technické parametry

The measurement was performed on mule spark-ignition engine 1.6 MPI, which was placed on a testbed. The special testbed has to be equipped with a 26 kW electric motor with speed control by a frequency converter. It also consists of a system of accurate coolant and oil temperature conditioning. The connection of the motored engine to the drive electric motor is a flexible coupling assembly and torque sensor (HBM T40 B, 200 Nm). When the engine is started and stopped, decompression bolts reduce driving torque peaks of the motoring engine for the easy initial spin of the engine at the testbed. There is also reduce torsional vibrations during the decelerating engine. When the engine was motoring, in-cylinders pressures were monitored and recorded online. Measurements and recording of the waveform of the engine torque, operating states of the running engine, and blow-by from the cylinders into the crankcase were performed using the measuring device (HBM MGCplus). All measurements were performed on a warm engine test station with coolant temperature stabilization at 85 °C and lubricating oil temperature stabilization at 90 °C..

  • Ekonomické parametry

Faster and more reliable experimental verification of different ICEs designs from the FMEP point of view (including selected subassemblies – e.g., piston, piston rings). Close cooperation between TUL and ŠKODA AUTO a.s regarding the research of the advanced method of testing the mechanical losses in the ICE, which also concerns other R&D projects..
