La habilidad limitada de la lengua shuar para expresar cantidades llamó la atención ya de los primeros investigadores que entraron en contacto con esta etnia de la Amazonía ecuatoriana. El objetivo de este trabajo es el de evidenciar y ejemplificar los cambios, mediante la comparación de la situación con la que se encontraron los primeros investigadores, las observaciones de Gnerre de los años 70 del siglo pasado, y la situación actual. Los datos fundamentales provienen de investigaciones propias realizadas entre los shuar desde el año 2010. Los resultados revelan la dinámica y vitalidad de tres sistemas numéricos en litigio. La situación de contacto lingüístico ha tenido como consecuencia no solo el declive del sistema numérico original, sino también el uso limitado del sistema nuevo introducido por los misioneros. Finalmente, el uso de los números en español es la opción más frecuente de las personas bilingües.

Some Observations on the Three Variants of the Shuar Numerical System

The limited ability of the Shuar language to express amounts draw the attention of the first researchers who came into contact with this ethnic group in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate and exemplify the changes, by comparing the situation that the early researchers found, Gnerre's observations made in the 70s of the last century, and the current situation. The fundamental data come from own research carried out among the Shuar since 2010. The results reveal the dynamics and vitality of three competing numerical systems. The situation of language contact has led not only to the decline of the original numerical system, but also to the limited use of the new system introduced by the missionaries. Finally, the use of numbers in Spanish is the most common option of all bilingual speakers.
