Das Buch bietet ein neues Konzept einer Sprachgeschichte: In drei ganz unterschiedlichen Teilen informiert es über den Gang und die wesentlichen Aspekte der deutschen Sprachgeschichte. Die großen Zusammenhänge werden in Längsschnitten dargestellt, die zeitlichen Abläufe in Beschreibungen der Epochen, linguistische Aspekte in einem besonderen Kapitel, das sich an modernen Methoden orientiert.

This book is characterized by a new concept of a linguistic history. Three different parts inform about the way and the important aspects of the history of the German language. Special "longitudinal sections" show the fundamental interrelationships, thechapters about the historical periods tell us the course of the linguistic evolution, and the third part uses modern methods for the explanation of development phenomena.
