Die französische Hauptstadt Paris spielte in der deutschen Geistesgeschichte eine nicht eindeutige Rolle. Sie galt insbesondere den Deutschnationalen als Inbegriff von Gott- und Sittenlosigkeit, Lust und Ausschweifung. Für einige Repräsentanten des deutschen Geisteslebens wurde Paris aber zu einem Zufluchtsort – z. B. für Heinrich Heine oder Alfred Döblin. Döblin musste sogar zweimal ins Pariser Exil gehen. Seine Begegnungen mit der „Venus-Stadt“ Paris legen von der anderen Rolle der französischen Metropole in der deutschen Geistesgeschichte Zeugnis ab.

In German intellectual history the French capital Paris plays a not clearly defined role. For the followers of the so called “German national movement” (Deutschnationale) it epitomised impiousness, immorality, lust and debauchery. For some representatives of the German intellectual live Paris on the other hand was a place of refuge, for instance for Heinrich Heine or Alfred Döblin. Döblin even had to go into the Parisian exile twice. His encounters with the „city of the Venus“, Paris, bear witness to the other role of the French capital in German intellectual history.
