Ausgehend von der Comic-Version von "Faust. Der Tragödie erster Teil" (1808) des Zeichners Flix, welche in Deutschland seit spätestens 2010 sehr erfolgreich war, wird die Frage nach der medialen und kulturellen Übersetzbarkeit wesentlicher Grundlagen des Plots dieses Dramas gestellt. Ausgehend vom Comic als populärer Gattung und der These der Allgemeinverständlichkeit von Bildern (gegenüber Sprachen) wird dabei auf einige von Goethes Bemerkungen zum Begriff 'Weltliteratur' eingegangen und ihr Bezug zum beginnenden liberalistischen Zeitalter eines 'freien geistigen Handelsverkehrs' hergestellt. Einige überraschend hellsichtige medienkritische Beobachtungen Goethes aus den "Maximen und Reflexionen" geben schließlich Anlass, die Möglichkeiten einer interkulturellen Popularisierung von "Faust" als Comic eher skeptisch zu beurteilen.

Starting from the comic strip version of "Faust. Der Tragödie erster Teil" by Goethe (1808) which, authored by Flix, proved quite successful in Germany since at least 2010, it is asked whether the plot of this drama might be renderes popular in different genres, media, and cultures. This discussion presupposes comic strips as a somewhat more popular genre and is based on the genereal assumption the pictures may be more widely understood than words, i.e., in other cultures as well. It this then referred to some remarks by Goethe on his concept of "Weltliteratur" ('word literature'), and its connection to the beginning era of liberalisms is laid open which he formulates by analogia as an era of free mental trade. Some fragments from Goethe's "Maximen und Reflexionen" which criticize media from a point of view which could as well be ours in our time then motivate a rather sceptical conclusion as to the prospects of a popularisation of "Faust" in other media or as comic strip.
