Generation Z: Ideals, Engagement, and the Future of Democracy

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Generation Z has entered adulthood in a period of major political, technological, and societal change, shaped strongly by digital environments and artificial intelligence. As the first true digital native generation, Gen Z exhibits high technological competence but also significant uncertainty and declining trust in traditional democratic institutions. This contribution analyses the values, political attitudes, and forms of civic engagement of Generation Z and their implications for the future of democracy. It highlights Gen Z’s strong commitments to social justice, transparency, human rights, and environmental sustainability, alongside growing skepticism toward political parties and representative mechanisms. The paper explores how social media, algorithmic curation, and AI-driven communication influence political socialization and participation. These processes can stimulate activism but also intensify polarization, short-term engagement, and political disengagement. Rather than portraying Gen Z as either a democratic savior or a disengaged generation, the contribution emphasizes structural conditions shaping their democratic potential. It argues that the future of democracy depends on the design of technological systems, the quality of civic education, and the development of digital and AI literacy. The paper offers a multidisciplinary perspective on how democratic engagement can be supported in an increasingly algorithmically governed public sphere.
