The paper deals with the issue of non-formal adult education in the Czech Republic. In the introduction the issue of education is set in deeper political, cultural,philosophical, pedagogical and financial contexts, which are, together with the labour market common denominators of the changes in the field of education in the 21st century. The next part of the paper pays attention to the selection of professional literature in adult education with an emphasis on the concept of a society of knowledge and the concept of a learning society. In the next part of the paper the goal, hypotheses, and research methodology are described. The goal is to compare the total participation and average number of hours spent on non-formal education for persons between 25and 64 years of age in the Czech Republic compared with European countries, a comparison of the participation in non-formal education according to the economic situation of those persons and involvement in non-formal education in the Czec
