On the brink of space colonisation: What are the current prospects for humanity to spread across the solar system?
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This chapter provides a summary of various proposals to enable space colonisation and assesses them in light of their technical and political feasibility. From the historical visions of Wernher von Braun to Elon Musk’s and the Space Frontier Foundation’s libertarian visions of today, the chapter analyzes visions over time regarding space colonisation and reflects on the barriers that humanity needs to cross to enable it. The chapter discusses various technologies for the early days (Moxie) up to terraforming visions, with an emphasis on how the choice over certain technologies could influence the way people would live in space as a society. Furthermore, the chapter looks on various political approaches to govern space colonies and assesses them in light of relevant political theories. The chapter discusses not only political theory applied to space colonisation but also how colonisation efforts interact with current international law, current economic systems, and emerging economic opportunities, such as space mining. We are on the brink of creating permanent settlements in space, which will grow and eventually seek their own political self-determination, whether in the shape of independence or in the Earth-related political system. These new societies will certainly develop their cultures and value frameworks, influencing the way we understand ourselves as humanity.
