An Outline History of American Drama
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This essay offers a brief introduction to the history of American theatre and drama. American theatre has a long history dating back to the 17th-century; however, American dramatic literature has held a more problematic and marginal position within the literary canon. American theatre and drama had originated in England and Ireland. The 18th-century American plays were strongly influenced by British dramatic pieces and the American stage was dominated by the British repertory. Andrew Jackson?s presidency, however, marked a turning point for American drama, which began to develop individually and separately from that time on. Continuing on the tradition established by Brackenridge, Tyler, Dunlap and others, the 19th-century further matured and finally reached its apex in the 20th century. The essay also includes the database of American plays performed at the J.K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen from the beginning of the 20th century.
