Macbethian Reminiscences: Macbeth in the Context of Twentieth-Century Events

This article examines the productions of Macbeth which were staged in Pilsen theatres in the twentieth century. Approached from a chronological perspective, it attempts to trace the reception of particular productions (i.e. in 1903, 1949, 1963, and 2000)in theatre reviews published in the local daily newspapers between the years 1903 and 2000. Based on reader-response theory, it furthermore argues that theatrical performances are rooted in particular spatial and temporal locations and socio-political environments. In this respect, the article aims to explore a relationship between particular productions and significant social and political events of the time, such as the assassination of the Serbian king in Belgrade at the beginning of the twentieth century, World War II, and the period of "liberalization" in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s. It thereby contributes to a better understanding of the history of Czech theatre alongside Czech national history.
