Adalbert Stifters Alpenberg in Bergkristall – eine Metapher für interkulturelle Kontakte im Böhmerwald und in den Böhmischen Ländern

Adalbert Stifters Erzählung Bergkristall (ersch. 1953, in der Urfassung unter dem Titel Der heilige Abend 1845) wird grundsätzlich als eine Alpenerzählung gelesen. Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt eine neue Lektüre vor, die sich im Kontext von anderen Stifterschen Texten anbietet, vor allem in Bezug auf den späteren historischen Roman Witiko (ersch. 1865-1867), der als eine rückwärtsgewandte Utopie über die deutsch-tschechischen Beziehungen gedeutet werden kann. Der Gletscherberg in Bergkristall muss nämlich nicht unbedingt als in den Alpen verortet wahrgenommen werden, sondern er kann als eine Metapher für die Spannungen zwischen der deutschen und tschechischen Kultur in der Böhmerwaldlandschaft bzw. in den Böhmischen Ländern (oder aber zwischen den Böhmischen Ländern und den Nachbarländern) verstanden werden. Als Metapher deutet der Berg auf einen liminalen Raum bzw. Grenzbereich zwischen Kulturen hin. Der interkulturelle Kontakt sowie die Grenzüberschreitung zeigen sich dabei für die menschliche Identität einerseits als gefährlich (das Besteigen des Gipfels birgt große Gefahren) und anderseits faszinierend (der Gletscher ist ein beeindruckendes Naturphänomen). Die Annäherung der Kulturen wird in Bergkristall als erwünscht dargestellt, denn sie rettet die sich auf dem Gars verlaufenen Kinder, die bisher in den beiden an Stifters Heimatlandschaft erinnernden und jeweils auf der anderen Gars-Seite situierten Dörfern (Millsdorf und Gschaid) als Außenseiter galten, weil die Mutter aus Millsdorf und der Vater aus Gschaid stammte.

The story Bergkristall by Adalbert Stifter (published in 1953, in the original version as Der heilige Abend in 1845) is, in principle, perceived as a story about the Alps. The submitted article presents a new interpretation that suggests itself in the context of other texts of Stifter, especially in relation to the later historical novel Witiko (published in 1865-1867) which can be considered as a utopia of the Czech-German relations concentrating on the idealized past. That is to say that the glacier in the story Bergkristall need not necessarily be perceived as a mountain situated in the Alps but can be regarded as a metaphor expressing the tension between the German and Czech cultures in Šumava, or in the Czech country (or the tension between the Czech country and neighboring countries). As the metaphor, the glacier refers to the liminal space, or possibly to the border between the cultures. For the human identity, the intercultural contact and border crossing seem as dangerous on one side (conquering the glacier is dangerous to life) and as fascinating act on the other side (the glacier is a fascinating natural phenomenon). In the story, the approximation of cultures is imaged as sought-after because it saves children who were lost on the Gars mountain and who were regarded as outsiders in both villages looking like Stifter‘s native land. That is, the mother comes from Millsdorf and the father from Gschaid being situated on the other side of the Gars mountain.
