Art for Nons is an art-based research project consisting of an art installation and extensive research on art for/with non-human actors. Together with many renowned theorists and artists, we explored the boundaries of theartistic space, explored our interactions with non-humans and co-created this long-them project in a morethan-human group. The installation Ars for Nons creates art for technology – which essentially is a part of society already. Art is notmade by nonhuman technology for humans, but in a mutual interaction of non-human and human actors. It asks why and how to create art for other-than-human beings. Ars for Nons creates a space for nonhumans,Nons, to immerse in Ars, an interactive art piece. The installation is conceptualised for the group of Nons thatare most likely to be present at the Ars Electronica Festival: smartphones. Every phone inhabits their own whitecube to conceive and contribute to an art installation consisting of sound, vibration, and imagery. In themeantime, the accompanying human waits. Ultimately, the installation stretches the human perspective, deconstructing and rethinking our relationship with art.At the fringes of an art installation that is not meant for you, we try to console you on the pages of the researchmagazine. The Ars for Nons Magazine is an experiment. While nonhumans are in touch with art, you can touchartistic research processes. The commissioned essay by famous anthropologist Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing isfocused on non-human communication manifestations of fungi and encourages the expansion of the concept ofcommunication - fungi do not have a language, but express themselves through form in motion to which wemust attune. Matthew Fuller (Goldsmith) focuses on art for animals. Darien Brito speculates on the possibilitiesof aesthetic perception of technological Nons, and Rébecca Kleinberger (MIT) writes about her experiences ofdesigning for animals.Creating an artwork for nonhumans - in this case smartphones - starts with a human’s inquiry. Discussing theentanglement of art, science, and technology, we wondered how we could acknowledge technology as part ofour society. The art industry constantly showcases art created by technology for humans. But what would itmean to create art for nonhuman technology instead?
