Was wissen wir heute eigentlich über das alltägliche Leben der einfachen Bewohner in den böhmischen Städten in der Zeit des Dreißigjährigen Krieges, über ihre Gedanken, Träume und Sehnsüchte? Während die Politik- und Militärgeschichte dieses längsten Kriegskonflikts in der Frühen Neuzeit in Tschechien ein wichtiges Thema Historiografie war und bleibt, steht die Problematik des Alltags in den Städten und auf dem Lande bisher abseits. Michel Stüeler (1583–1656), ein Gerber aus der böhmischen Stadt Graupen (tsch. Krupka), führte zeitlebens ein Tagebuch, das in großen Teilen als Abschrift erhalten ist. Damit überlieferte er eine einzigartige Informationsfülle zum Alltag eines kleineren Ortes, die von anderen böhmischen Städten für diesen Zeitraum kaum zur Verfügung steht. Der Autor stellt hier die Biographie Stüelers vor, der nicht nur ein scharfsinniger Beobachter und Protokollant der Ereignisse, sondern auch Träger vieler sozialer Rollen war. So tritt er z. B. als Untertan, Beamter oder Bergmeister auf, aber auch als Vater und Ehemann, Chronist und Kriegsopfer, Gerber und Landwirt, Gläubiger oder Sterblicher.

What do we actually know today about the everyday lives of ordinary inhabitants in the Bohemian cities during the Thirty Years&apos; War, about their thoughts, dreams and longings? While the political and military history of this longest war conflict in the early modern period in the Czech Republic was and remains an important subject of historiography, the problem of everyday life in the cities and in the countryside stands aside. Michel Stüeler (1583-1656), a tanner from the Bohemian town of Graupen (Czech Krupka), led a life-long diary, which is largely preserved as a copy. He thus delivered a unique wealth of information on the everyday life of a smaller town, which is hardly available from other Bohemian cities for this period. Jan Kilián introduces the biography of Stüeler, who was not only an astute observer and historian of events, but also the bearer of many social roles. So he enters for example as a serf, official or mountain master, but also as a father and husband, chronicler and war victim, tanner and farmer, believer or mortal.
