Methods of Determination of Total Carbon and Transformation of this Problematic to the Chemistry Education
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Carbon is one of the most abundant elements in nature, and its chemistry is accompanying the education of chemistry since its beginning. At the same time, chemical equation describing the oxidation of carbon to carbon dioxide is the simplest and it can easily be used to explain calculations in chemistry. Therefore, suitable procedures were sought to supplement this curriculum with a practical side. The determination of total carbon is carried out in practice by various methods. Some of them are based on the complete oxidation of carbon compounds to carbon dioxide either by heating to a high temperature in the presence of oxygen or by using various oxidizing agents. The contribution discusses various methods of oxidation of carbon compounds, but also various methods of detection of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, the possibilities of transforming these laboratory procedures so that they can be performed in the conditions of school laboratories and at the same time obtain results that would be relevant are discussed. The next part of the work is devoted to the theoretical apparatus, which will allow the calculated data to calculate the carbon content in selected compounds and verification and evaluation of selected procedures in terms of their applicability in teaching at various levels of the schools.
