A dynamics of rotors supported by journal bearings is the important issue, which is solved in real industrial applications. This paper deals with the basic rotordynamics equations of motion and chosen approaches to a journal bearing modelling. A standardapproach based on the pre-calculation of stiffness and damping properties is described and compared with another approach implemented in the AVL EXCITE multi-body software, which is characterized by solving of elastohydrodynamic equations in a time domain. Results given by both approaches are compared using the particular example of a real rotor. Parametric studies are also performed in order to evaluate effects of various settings on the calculated dynamic behaviour.
