Selected Accidents in Railway Transportation and the Specifics of Interventions by the Fire and Rescue Service Units of the Railway Administration

Railway transportation is one of the safest means of transport in the Czech Republic. Railway transportation develops with society, in terms of travel comfort, acceleration, services, and railway infrastructure. It is necessary to reflect on this development in relation to individual safety measures and railway operator preparedness. Due to professional activities and manipulations, interventions during emergencies that occur near railway tracks must be carried out in close cooperation with railway employees and rescue services, especially fire protection units. This study aims to process the primary characteristics of the accidents that occur and the associated risks during railway operations, such as fire, interventions at power stations, traffic accidents at railway crossings, collisions between people or animals in rail vehicles, and the derailment of rail vehicles. Another task is to reflect on the activity and specifics of the railway fire protection unit. This unit is a primary tool in preventing and averting danger or solving railway emergencies through rescue and liquidation work. Due to the scope and focus of this article, we did not address terrorism in connection with railway traffic. The study provides a comprehensive view of some examples of railway transportation risks, along with individual safety elements. They create a system of protection and safety links in railway transportation in the Czech Republic.
