Bernhards Werk ist einerseits auf die Beschreibung der Vernichtungsmechanismen und auf die Bloßstellung der Ursachen der Zersetzung und Zerstörung angelegt, andererseits auf die Gegenbilder, die der Zersetzung und Zerstörung standhalten. Auf dem langen Weg von Frost zu Auslöschung sind Kunst, Freundschaft und Liebe zu solchen Gegenbildern gewordne. Gefunden werden solche positiv konnotierte Motive durch eine genaue Stilanalyse: Wo der Autor auf seine negative Hyperbolik verzichtet, kann man diese schlichten Gegenbilder entdecken.
