Crop Residue Management for Soil Health and Environmental Sustainability: A Comprehensive Review

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Sustainable agricultural productivity and soil health are of paramount importance to meet the growing demands for food and income. Conventional farming practices, characterized by intensive tillage and reliance on chemical fertilizers, have historically compromised soil health, leading to resource inefficiency, pollution, erosion, and loss of soil structure. To counter these challenges, it is essential to sustain agricultural practices that promote soil fertility and productivity. This review highlights the transformative potential of crop residues as a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers. By incorporating crop residues, one can enhance soil health, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, combat soil degradation, sequester carbon, and remediate pollutants. Crop residues not only serve as a valuable source of essential nutrients upon decomposition, but they also enrich the soil's carbon content, fostering beneficial microbial activity that improves soil structure and overall health. We explore the multifaceted benefits of various crop residues in enhancing soil health, which is critical for boosting crop productivity. Additionally, we delve into the synergistic effects of combining crop residues with other amendments, providing insights into efficient utilization strategies that can lead to sustainable soil management. This review explores the multifaceted benefits of crop residues in soil health enhancement and outlines practical integration strategies for sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.
