The study focuses on the fictional spaces of Emily Brontë's novel Wuthering Heights not only in terms of the traditional notion of its romantic, gothic and realistic elements covering space but it also examines the theoretical notion of understanding space in terms of Bachelard's phenomenology, i. e. the house in the centre of the universe (The Poetics of Space, Ch. House and Universe). The study also relates the archetypal division of space in Victorian novels to Freud's theory of dream and the unconscious, pointing out the term of the "uncanny", closely bound to the genre of the gothic novel.
