According to theories of plant antiherbivore defences, apparent plants utilise quantitative protective compounds, whose efficiency increases with ageing of foliage. In contrast, unapparent plants utilise qualitative chemicals, whose protective efficiencyremains approximately constant during leaf age. It should follow that leaf-chewing insects feeding on apparent plants should synchronise hatching with appearance of fresh leaves. Since fresh leaves are typically available early in season in temperate environments, such insects, including butterfly larvae, should be constrained in annual numbers of generations. In contrast, no such constraint should apply to butterfly larvae feeding on unapparent, qualitatively protected plants. We tested the hypothesisusing European butterflies, using both classical regressions and regressions controlled for phylogeny via independent contrasts.
