Students of the University of Defence (UoD) are required to study English and a second foreign language — French, German, or Russian. The exit requirement is an exam in accordance with NATO STANAG 6001 at a minimum level of SLP 1111. Nevertheless, a small number of students voluntarily choose to take the STANAG exam at a higher level than the required SLP 1111. This paper explores the motivations of UO students to take the STANAG exam in German at a higher level than the compulsory minimum SLP 1111. Respondents were asked, via a semi-structured questionnaire, about the motivational factors — whether institutional, professional or personal — that influenced their decision. The findings may be used to adapt teaching methodologies in students with higher language proficiency and to increase the percentage of UO graduates who achieve higher proficiency in their second foreign language by boosting their motivation.
