The Use of Tribodiagnostics for Evaluating the Quality of Engine Oil in Military Combat Vehicles

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The article deals with the determination of the technical condition of internal combustion engines in combat tracked vehicles. These powerful military diesel engines operate in a variety of extreme conditions, and therefore it is essential to monitor engine oil degradation and the overall state of engine wear. Samples of engine oil were taken from combat equipment and then tested using modern equipment. One method was infrared spectrometry, which allows the detection of chemical changes associated with degradation, such as oxidation, nitration, sulphation, water content or residual additives. It identifies specific chemical bonds and compounds by their absorption wavelengths, allowing the oil to be monitored for ageing, acid formation, loss of alkalinity (TBN) or the presence of contaminants such as fuel or soot. While emission spectrometry is used to analyze the chemical composition of the oil, to identify metallic elements originating from wear, additives or contaminants. It monitors the number of elements such as iron, copper or aluminium to help diagnose the condition of the engine or transmission. Ferrography complements the previous method, allowing the size, shape and quantity of these particles to be analyzed. It can determine the type of wear (e.g. abrasive or adhesive) and identify potential problems such as bearing failure. The samples tested indicate that the engines have a problem with the air filter. Necessary measures include inspection and replacement of th filter.
