The chapter deals with a brief overview of the development of interdisciplinarity theory and research in the development of the context of classic and modern science, then focuses on social sciences and their classification in accordance with different criteria and within different systems. This classification later provides a basis for typology, classification and different indices used for quantitative and qualitative measurement of interdisciplinarity in general, its links to the real economy, and its reflection in the development of economic thinking within social sciences. At the end of the chapter, the perceived benefits of interdisciplinary approaches in social sciences and their studies are mentioned.
