Spruce forests decline in the Beskids
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In recent years, the unfavourable status of spruce stands in several regions of Europe has called for huge investments into research as well as into measures for mitigating the impacts of this process. The Beskids mountain range, straddling the borders of Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic, is among the most heavily damaged. We summarize in this publication the history, present status, as well as causes and prospects of spruce decline in the Beskids. In addition to the principal topics, such as airpollution impacts and the activity of fungal pathogens and insect pests, the authors also address silviculture measures, prospects for forest conversion, and utilisation of forest trees? genetic potential. An additional chapter complements the text witha series of satellite and airborne images describing the progress of decline in recent years. This book is a product of teamwork involving scientists from national research agencies and academia in Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic
