The book's chapters focus on Mánes's detailed studies of organic and inorganic naturals (from the field of botany - flowers, trees; geology - formations of rocks, stones, rocks), but also on landscape motifs (especially images of the sky, clouds, light and meteorological phenomena amidst natural scenery). Josef Mánes was the son of Antonín Mánes, who held the position of professor of landscape specialty at the Academy of Fine Arts between 1836 and 1843. Under the supervision of his father, together with his siblings, sister Amalia and later his younger brother Quido, Josef Mánes sketched en plein air from the mid-1830s. Although Josef Mánes subsequently studied and professionally specialised in the hierarchically situated genre of history painting, he continuously devoted himself to the study of landscapes and natural landscapes with great intensity, often wandering and roaming through the countryside, among other things to capture diverse natural formations and phenomena in situ. In one of his sketching studies, Self-Portrait on the Road (1854), he depicted himself as 'a wanderer with a stick and a bag on his back', in which he probably carried a sketchbook, pencil, pen, ink and a few selected colours in tubes. A number of Mánes's sketches and paintings of smaller sizes have survived, many of which were made en plein air, often in the middle of a forest, in a meadow, or on mountain hills overlooking the horizon. Studies of naturals and landscapes were an intimate private interest for Josef Mánes, not directly tied to specific artistic commissions.
