A study of hydrotreating process in a bench-scale reactor is often complicated by variations in catalyst condition, reactor dynamics and intra- and interphase oil transport phenomena. Laboratory investigations were carried out in a cocurrent down-flow trickle-bed reactor over a wide range of operating conditions using straight run atmospheric gas oil as feedstock. Upon experiments carried out in the tube reactor 478 mm long, 22 mm ID, fitted with central thermowell, the isothermal zone was approximately60 mm long. The temperatures measured by thermocouples in thermowell corresponded to those measured by moveable thermocouple placed directly in the catalyst bed. Temperature profiles of catalyst bed were very slightly affected by feed rate and pressureof the reactor.
