Treatment of ammonia polluted groundwater in North Bohemia brown coal mining region
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
A feasibility study was completed to asses the applicability of two groundwater treatment technologies at the site, where a brown coal processing plant released 4000 tons of ammonia into the subsurface. The presented groundwater amonnia concentration (approx. 100 ppm) was required to be reduced to 0,5 ppm to satisfy the Czech groundwater remediation directives. Two technological principles were examined within this study - air stripping and reverse osmosis - with the aim to confirm their capacity to reach the ammonia remediation limit as well as to provide cost estimation. Both technological processes were simulated by means of pilot-scale installation using samples of contaminated groundwater. Air stripping was found to be ineffective at the current groundwater temperature; the remediation limit was achievable only if groundwater heating was considered, which resulted in unacceptable costs. Reverse osmosis, on the other hand, clearly demonstrated its capacity to clean up the ammonia p
