Respiration of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) degrading microorganisms
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Fuel oxygenates added to petrols in last 15 years are water soluble ethers such as methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE). In the Czech Republic MTBE has been produced in amount of about 92 000 tons per year in recent years. It is probable that the risk of environmental pollution may be rather higher in the CR than in other countries which are not self-sufficient with the oxygenates. Several bacterial strains and consortia capable to utilize MTBE were isolated from fuel-contaminated sites. The screening was based on monitoring of selected microorganisms in the presence of MTBE. The ability of microorganisms to degrade MTBE as the sole carbon source or by cometabolism with other substrates was monitored by gas chromatography with FID detection. Enzymes responsible for MTBE utilization have not yet been defined. We tested our isolated bacterial consortia for endogenous respiration and for for the ability of the strains to aerobically metabolize MTBE by monitoring their respiration with this and
