Confirming smartphone-based assay results using instrumental analysis

The hyphenation of screening bioanalytical assays to smartphones as the analytical detector is a newly emerged concept introducing unprecedented features in the chemical analysis, for example, real-time result communication and analysis at the point-of-need. To establish this new generation of diagnostics and enhance the trust behind their application, it is necessary to benchmark them towards golden standard methods such as chromatographic separation coupled to mass spectrometry (MS). In this chapter, to highlight the importance of instrumental analysis in confirming the results obtained by screening methods such as the smartphone-based assays, we provide a comprehensive overview on chromatography principles and instrumentation. Both liquid chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC) techniques are extensively discussed focusing on the various detectors with special focus on MS analysers. A summary of smartphone-based assays is also presented focusing on the cross-comparison of their results towards instrumental analysis, the so-called “benchmarking.” In this way, the complementarity between screening and confirmatory methods is emphasized and the importance of assay result confirmation is highlighted. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.
