A series of N 4 -alkyl-5-azacytidines was prepared and a formation of aggregates with their hydrolytical products were observed. On the basis of hydrogen bonding in these aggregates the mechanism of the mutagenicity of 2'-deoxy-5-azacytosine was hypothesized.
