We showed that analyses in which the microbiota mediates between the disease and its outcomes can reveal important biological patterns that might remain hidden when assessed using a traditional analytical framework. Therefore, we believe that mediation analyses can not only significantly improve our understanding of how the microbiota is involved in the health consequences of disease but can also help develop strategies to improve the quality of life of diseased individuals through targeted interventions to the microbiota.
