The chapter is meant as an introduction, informing the reader what are the aims of this new field of technology and what are its distinguishing features. There is a section ?Caleidoscope of typical devices? presenting a number of examples of microfluidic devices, based on the gradually increasing number of their terminals. Particular attention is paid to the effects of extremely low Reynolds numbers.
