Effect of Group Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Community Dwelling Older Adults on their Mental Health and Quality of Life: Interventional Study
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the group cognitive behavior therapy program "Aging wisely" for community dwelling older adults on their mental health and quality of life. The research involved 145 older people living in the community. Within mental health, we evaluated anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and a sense of coherence. The following scales were used to evaluate these variables: Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI), The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale - (RSES), The Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC-13), The Social Support Questionnaire - short form (SSQ6). The OPQOL_brief (The Older People Quality of Life brief) was used to evaluate quality of life. Group CBT has been shown to be effective for several outcomes in older adults. The largest effect size was found for depression (Cohen's d=-1.3; 95% CI: -1.6 - -1.0) and anxiety (Cohen's d = -1.2; 95% CI: -1.5 - -0.9), when it was a large effect size and which persisted three months after the intervention. For the effect on overall QoL, OPQOL_brief, SOC-13 and social support, a medium effect size was demonstrated after the intervention (Cohen's d = 0.5-0.7; 95% CI: 0 0.1 -0.9). The group CBT has been shown to be effective in alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety, improving self-esteem, sense of coherence, perception of social support, and quality of life. This intervention can be offered as a useful psychological intervention to support the mental health of older people living in the community.
