The book is based on a comparative study of the verb in a Czech fictional narrative and its English translation. It serves as an introduction to the new concepts of verb operation since it deals with the verb beyond its most frequent function - transition. It concentrates on the conditions and rules under which it performs the FSP function of either the theme or the rheme. At the same time it demonstrates that not only the semantic capacity of the verb but also the semantic capacity of the other elements within a particular distributional field form a decisive factor in a particular semantic scale implementation. For it is a study of a narrative text, this work further deals with the aesthetic function of the text and observes various linguistic meanswhich an author exploits to pursue his communicative purpose. It further offers suggestions on the marked operation of the FSP factors.
