Rares sont les termes qui ont provoqué au cours des cent derni?res années une adhésion et un rejet aussi importants que l?absurde. L?exemple le plus criant de cette problématisation est la conception du ? Théâtre de l?absurde ?. La présente étude pose les questions suivantes : Indépendamment de la conception de M. Esslin, l?absurde peut-il représenter une catégorie esthétique opérationnelle ? Si tel est le cas, quelles sont ses caractéristiques ? L?objectif de l?article est d?examiner le potentiel esthétique de l?absurde auquel renvoient ses définitions lexicographique et philosophique. Comme le terme a été dans les années 1950 fortement popularisé par les existentialismes français, cette étude interrogera tant ses définitions contemporaines que, afind?entendre dans quelle mesure considérer l?absurde comme une catégorie esthétique est l?héritage de Sartre et Camus, celles provenant des décades antérieures aux années 1930.

Rare are the terms which have during the past hundred years, as related to aesthetic conceptions, reached large popularity and deep critics such as the absurd. The most illustrative example of which is the conception of the ? Theatre of the Absurd ?. This study firstly puts out the following questions: Independently of Esslin´s conception, can the absurd function as an operational aesthetic category ? If so, what is its characteristics? The aim of this paper is to examine the aesthetic potential of theabsurd as pointed out by its definitions and examples of use contained in dictionaries of general purpose and philosophy. Since the absurd became in the 1950´s a concept in vogue related mainly to French existentialism, the study shall focus not only oncontemporary definitions, but also on the ones from the decades preceeding 1930, so that to understand to which extent considering the absurd as an aesthetic category is the heritage of Sartre and Camus.
