Głównym celem tekstu jest zwrócenie uwagi na fakt, że rozrywka intelektualna, którą możemy nazwać uczeniem przez zabawę, była w średniowieczu dość mocno rozpowszechniona, wbrew nierzadkim twierdzeniom, że średniowieczne kształcenie było w zasadzie całkowicie oparte na bezmyślnym zapamiętywaniu.

The paper analyses selected ancient and medieval philosophers? opinions on the problem of games. The main attention of the study focuses on two very influential texts in Middle Ages ? short treatise De spectaculis by Tertullian of Carthage and Question Nr. 168 from the second part of the Second Part of Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas. Moreover the paper deals with the roots and inspirations of medieval interpretations regarding the roles of games in the Christian society: The doxographical tradition connected with the oldest ancient philosophers (Thales of Miletus and Pythagoras of Samos), other selected ancient philosophers(mainly Plato and Aristotle) and naturally the biblical texts. Finally the article shortly introduces two intellectual mathematical board games.
